Ever since I was in the fourth grade I knew that being an actor was all I wanted to do. And almost twelve years later it is still all I want to do. It is the most pure passion I have, I love to play pretend. As adults we are told to be “realistic” and it squashes our creative self. It's hard. Sometimes our passions don't feel joyful anymore. Sometimes they feel like obligations and jobs. To anyone feeling like this, this is what I say: remember why you started. This was my advice to the first year students at the Conservatory this year. It's so important. I started acting because it was fun. That's it plain and simple. My first role in a play was a ghost-buster and my current role is Elinor in Sense and Sensibility, vastly different. But they are both still playing pretend, one is just a little more advanced. My passion has never disappeared, only grown. But sometimes it is temporarily blocked by the feelings of stress, time constraints, due dates or doubts. Especially being in aconservatory setting, I am balancing performing with school work.
Remembering why I started acting in the first place refocuses my mind to what is important. It makes me remember how lucky I am that I get to do exactly what I love every single day, even if it does get stressful. I am a perfectionist in every sense of the word and I get overwhelmed sometimes by the amount of work I have to get done in a short amount of time. But then I remember that I am so lucky that I even have work to be doing. So lucky that my job is to play! As I continue to move forward with my training and begin my life as a professional actor, remembering why I started is crucial. I will never forget my nine year old self falling completely in love with something I knew nothing about, and taking the leap of faith to commit my life to it. I remember running offstage and telling my parents that I had decided how I wanted to spend my life. Everyone starts something for a reason, you just have to keep reminding yourself why.
Sophie Foti will play the Sensible sister, Elinor, in the February 2016 show Sense and Sensibility directed by Brenda Hubbard. Don't miss it! She has been amazing as the stage manager for A Midsummer Night's Dream.
